I knew something was wrong all week this week. Maybe it was the fact it was our aniversary but here is your correct episode for last week. You'll start with Churchill's Bodyguard and learn how Winston does with Indian assasins in the US. Then we'll see how Sir John does recruiting people for the crusades and see how Sherlock Holmes solves a case ... from his armchair. |
Fri, 18 September 2009
In this episode we begin with "Churchill's Bodyguard and the second episode "Lawrence and Walter Save The Day." It's Churchill's first Middle East conference as colonial secretary and you'll see that in 88 years not much has changed. WE then move on to the Castle and learn about Sir Walter DeIsney. Plus onter pop culture references and end up at 221b Baker where Holmes and Watson bring down "The Redheaded League. Enjoy |
Sat, 12 September 2009
This episode gets direct credit from Fred Bertelsen. As all these shows we'll be hearing for the next few weeks were proams he originally wanted to play. First we'll learn about Walter Thompson Winston Churchill's bodyguard. Although a tv program it's well narrated and I think you'll enjoy learning about this fascinating man. Then we'll revissit The Castle. Sir William throws a party to try to woo Anne and a certain swearing chef is involved. Then we begin "The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes," with "Scandal in Bohemia." Special thanks to the Disney Indiana crew for help here. For more on their great podcast please go to http://www.disneyindiana.com enjoy. |

This week on Brunch we begin with the play "The Airman who Would Not Die." It's an adaptation from the book by John Fuller and tells the story of the eight men who died when Britain's airship candidate the R1 crashed in 1930. It delves in to mediums and seyances and I think you will enjoy it. AFter that we laugh as we learn about song parodies. Don't forget next week we begin looking at Sherlock HOlmes again and we look at Winston Churchill's bodyguard. Enjoy. |

I'm afraid the Brunch voice mail went caput with my frequent overtimes but no worries. It'll be back up soon. Let me begin by telling you we're begining with a Bible mystery again this time talking about Joshua and the Battle of Jeriko. We then look at "The Saint Closes the Case." It's England in the 1930's. Noone trusts anyone be it English or Nazi and the Saint is right in the middle. Enjoy. Those of you looking for the summer marathon stay tuned as it'll be posted soon. Questions or comments? Email still works. brunch@london.com |

I want to begin this overview by thanking David O'neil from Extinct Attractions. Just recently he played an intervew of himself done by another podcaster. Well if Dave can do it ... so can I. And I really wanted to share this one with you guys without starting another podcast. So here it is. Lst Saturday I participated in an interview roundtable with noted baseball historian and local radio talk show host Ira Fistel. We talked about a lot of stuff including the 1919 Black Sox Scandal how baseball games were originally thrown the difference between a 19th century and current game and the state of baseball broadcasting. The pannel includes myself, noted otr personality Larry Gassman, Mike Stern and our exultant chair Bob Acosta. It's an hour and a half. And I really hope you come away learning something. If you're a baseball fan you're gonna love it. Btw what does this have to do with Brunch or BBC? Nothing!! But if Gary Chambers can take four month breaks and David Bales can just disappear ... lol ... well I can digress sometimes. Enjoy. |

Yes this week we're only featuring one program. But it's long. It's "The Adventures Of Superman," as promised at fotm. A program where you ... the listener get to be the judge on American accents. Next week I promise we go back to being British but for now enjoy "Supeman." |
Sun, 9 August 2009
This has not been the easiest week for me. So I was glad the oprotunity showed itself and I was able to play this "surprise" for Tracey Morris of Disney Indiana. But I think you'll all enjoy it. It's "The Adventures of Superman," and it's the end of our "State Of The States," for this year. This fine piece directed by Dirk Maggs and written by him shows really great stereo sound and I think you will truly enjoy it. Next week catch m live at the Radio Out Of The Past Summer Marathon. Just go to http://www.radiooutofthepast.org beginning on Saturday August 15 at 9 am Pacific. You'll have to download some software but if you have a microphone you can participate. Looking forward to meeting you live for two days of old time radio prizes yes you read that right ... prizes ... and fn. My actual hosting begins at Noon Pacific on Sunday August 16. We have a full episode this week plus a rant at the end. You could say that this is an episode full of wrapping up. See we start off by finishing "The Gunfighters." After that we have a brief interview with Peter Purves who played Steven in the original series. We move on to wrap up "The Dust Bowl Baladeers," chronicling the life of Woody Guthrie from WWII through his early death in 1967 at the age of 55. We then conclude with the final episode of the Arthur Conan Doyle novel "The Sign Of The Four," entitled "The Great Agra Treasure." And we finish all these wrapups by discussing last weekend's Friends Of The Magic. If you heard Matt Cox laugh this week you get to hear him rant. Send us an email at brunch@london.comcom or call us at 206 338 5879 and tell us what you prefer. There's also a question for you the listener this week as well. Thanks for listening and enjoy the show. |

I record one episode a week and I can truly say this was the most fun as we debut our first and hopefully not last pannel. For starters we'll listen to "The Gunfighters," and see what's happening with the Doctor Steven and Dodo as they make their ways through Tombstone. From there we're continuing our look at the States through the music of Woody Guthrie. It's a look at Woody's early life and is hosted by Billy Bragg. Finally we have .... the pannel. Yes a full fledged discussion with some laughter songs and the Mortis too. We actually have Liana Kilgore from Extinct Attractions or http://www.classicthemeparks.com Scott and Tracy from Disney Indiana at http://www.disneyindiana.com and last but not least our movie guru the Mortis at http://www.themortis.com or Mortis Studios East. other then the fact that my microphone was away from my face for oh about five minutes not bad for a first pannel and I look forward to more. Remember to email us at brunch@london.com and call us at 206-338-5879

The Joy Luck Club ... will probably be the closest to a ... and I use the word with true affection "chick flick," Brunch'll ever get. Yet it is American and I do hope you enjoy it. We also begin "The Gunfighters," our first Doctor Who adventure and listen to the music of Woody Guthrie through our host Billy Bragg. Enjoy this week's episode. |
Sat, 4 July 2009
In this episode we look at our second Fourth Of July extravaganza with programs with a truly American theme. Well some of them at any rate. We start by finishing Peter Pan. And if Disney's is the only one you're familiar with you're in for a treat with the rreal thing. Then we conclude the first season of The Navy Lark and end with a walk down L.A.'s mean streets and yes friends this was recorded in England with Philip Marlowe and the Raymond cChandler classic "The High Window." Also check out the blooper at the end and just what does Doctor Who have to do with our state of the states festivities? Our pannel is coming soon so stay tuned. |
Sat, 27 June 2009
In this episode we continue our countdown to the Friends of The Magic Meet at Disneyland later in July. But we also look back. Oh yes there's Peter Pan and "The Navy Lark," but our second hour is dedicated to the late Michel Jackson. This isn't a King Of Pop weekend filled with phone calls and songs heard over and over again but rather a Radio 2 docmentary called "Michael Jackson's Masterpiece." It discusses Thriller and what Thriller meant and symbolized. If this is your first time listening because you've just discovered us then I hope you come back when we return to normal. But for my loyal fans this hopefully will not disappoint. Remember you can email brunch@london.com or call 206-338-5879. Please enjoy. |
Fri, 19 June 2009
In this episode we continue our fotm countdown with more from "The Wind In The Willows," and "Peter Pan." But first a look at "The Navy Lark." This is Brunch 71. First off lots of voice mail and email this week and all pro on The Avengers. That makes me feel good. Anyhow this week we have a history of sorts. It's Called "For One Night Illegally," and it traces the evolution of bootlegged recording. Anyone who remembers Springstein's famous line "Bootleggers roll your tapes." will love this show. Dixon ends its first run with us this week with George dealing with a gun toting soldier without Andy. And our boys in the Navy take a psychology test. Nothng unusal there but these are our boys. Next week we begin "When Disney Had Brunch," a four part look at original work that Disney adapted. Enjoy and don't forget to email brunch@london.com with thoughts or suggestions and also call 206-338-5879 and being in California I had to get this in. Lakers in 6 |
Sat, 30 May 2009
It's hard to believe that a little show started among a few friends with a passion for BBC radio has blossomed in to 70 episodes. And this week Brunch brings you music, commedy and police drama. I'd like to say that if you like Pink Floyd you'll love this show ... if you're a casual observer of the band you'll like this show and if you love the band and its psychedelic sound this will go in to your ipod along with your Dark Side of the Moon album. But we can't flood you with Floyd without taking a cruise on the HMS Troutbridge or learn from Officer Dixon about rowdy Spurs fans so ... say when ... and get ready to enjoy Brunch With The Brits. |
Thu, 21 May 2009
Sadly this week two shows end. Hitchhikers goes on hiatus after the second series ends. Meanwhile in Portsmouth we look at "The Gun Mechanism Test." With Dixon we learn how a baby was named after Dixon and we sadly say goodbye to Bob Hope. |
Thu, 14 May 2009
Just how did Arthur Dent wind up among archaeologists? wWhat happened when a drunken night in Portsmouth went crazy?? Why were so many servicemen drawn to Bob Hope's humor? And how did PC Crawford make his first arrest? All to be answered this week. I am attending fotm in July at Disneyland. We're working on a Brunch meet and setting ourselves up on the fotm page. If you're coming let me know. |
Thu, 7 May 2009
Just what happens when Arthur Dent gets captured by a bunch of birds? Also who is Heather's Hank? What was it like to write for Bob Hope? Oh and Whose Line is it Anyway? All this week at Brunch. Enjoy. |
Thu, 30 April 2009
In this episode we begin with our Galactic hitchhike. Just what do aliens think of British tea? Feel free to share and enjoy. Meanwhile an admiral is throwing a party at Portsmouth and Price and Philips are there but so is the Chief. At Whose Line John Bird and Jimmy Mullville join John Sessions and Steven Fry and Bob Hope continues to amaze as we leave New York for Los Angeles and Palm Springs. Btw Friends of The Magic is in July and we're preparing a pannel disscussion about two British authors and Disney. Want to help? Email brunch@london.com with"Pannel in the subject line. And if you want to see me play in the Disney Feud email jonathan@allaboutthemouse.com and tell him that while Brunch is not a Disney podcast we're celebrating Friends of the Magic the only way the BBC knows how. Enjoy. |
Thu, 23 April 2009
I'm leaving for an early retreat this weekend so the show's early. For our 65th edition we begin as always with Hitchhikers then see what happens with Philips command of the Trowbridge play a bit of Whose Line this week with Griff Ries Jones and Kate Robbins and finally learn about Bob Hope's life in Cleveland. Enjoy. |
Fri, 17 April 2009
First off Dave Bales joins us twice this week. Once to say thanks to MOrtis but be sure and listen to the end of the program for a very misty Dave Bales. I picture the Oregon Coast as misty. As far as programs well trouble arrises off Portsmouth Harbour when our Navy boys discover they haven't spent a dime of the unit comfort fund. Meanwhile our hitchhikers return and everyone seems involved including Ford and Arthur. We then play Whose Line with Clive Anderson and we begin "The Bob Hope Trail." First stop? Ellis Island. Enjoy your Brunch. Btw next week gang with my retreat your getting Brunch early. |
Sat, 11 April 2009
This week we begin with a documentary called "Who Killed Jesus," for Easter. It's quite well done and may leave you with some questions. aAfter that we revissit that little island off the coast of Portsmouth only to find the lads are off to sea. Finally in honor of our dear friend Mr. Bales we present James Bond in "Dr. No." Enjoy and happy Easter. |
Fri, 3 April 2009
As a new podcaster meaning less then a year it's hard to believe I've gained an audience this fast. One fan Dave has emailed me a lot first off to say that he's enjoyed all shows from number 1 to now. So why not celebrate his birthday? We start with "The Mysterious Affair At Styles," which we finish this week. Were you surprised at the murderer? Then we listen to "The Navy Lark," and finally finish "The Pickwick papers." We end with a teaser for next week's show which even though it's for Dave we hope the rest of you will enjoy as well. Enjoy.

Our dear friend and co host's health is taking a sharp decline sharper then planned so he has a doctor's apointment MOnday to just see what's going on. Full details to start the show but if you go right in to the drama and not listen to my intro then please pray for Fred. it's ... his breatheing. Okay so this horror thing needs a little lightening up. I mean let's face it there were Santa Ana winds a plenty this week while Brunch was being put together Dsl's were not connecting or disconnecting I tested new work software and yet and yet ... Brunch is on time. And what's on tap for Brunch 38? Well we start with "Billion Dollar Baby," a profile of Alice Cooper by a leading bBritish rock jock. After an hour with Alice we listen again to "As Time Goes By," and travel back 700 years or so to check on or favorite knight and learn what happens when "The Castle," gets a satellite dish. Should be fun real quick notes check your feeds this week I've got a couple of "Bedtime Tidbits," planned only a couple because next week leading up to all hallows Eve we'll be putting on some wonderful stories for your evening firetime. Now if the weather in California would just get cold enough for firetime. On October 31 at 7 pm eastern join us at http://www.radiooutofthepast.org for a live Hallowene marathon of great old time radio which I"ll eventually put up here in case you can't come and oh yes November 25 yours truly is going to be at Disneyland along with my dear friend Eric Troup partying with Patrick Herd as in wttm's own so if for some reason you have nothing to do you live in California or can fly down to California you can come and meet the not so better half of Brunch With The Brits. Just like you could meet Fred in Chicago next summer. Now when are Fred and I planning a trip to London for a real bBrunch With The Brits? ... You know I've never thought about that but that would be fun. Gonna have to contact Jenna at Main Street Travel. ... And get a passport haven't had one in ten years Heather doesn't even have one yet poh and speaking of Heather this is her first presidential election guys and while I did rock the cradle she's not 18 she's just never voted before. Okay enought chit chat yack yack and flip flam let's refrain from hibernating and we'll all enjoy the show. In all sincerity if a Brunch London trip interests you email us and you're darn right I'll contact Jenna over at Main Street tTravel.I don't know call it Brunch With The Brits London Blitz no that'd be to just not cool funny but not cool. |

What's one of Fred Bertelsen's greatest atributes? You can say fine radio host outstanding co host has an extemperaneous side is willing to help anyone with anything otr or BBC related but he's also a bit of a snoop. In a good way. This is a program called dDead Fall and was part of the CBC mystery project or as they say project take the pro part likepro sports and you get the idea. Anyway Mystery Project actually put several BBC plays among its titles and here's one of them. You might also enjoy the Winter Olympic update from Salt Lake in 02. Please enjoy the man in blue as he flies solo for this little surprise. Questions? Coments? brunch@london.com oh and btw if you've ever wanted to hear me live not that you've wanted to but if you do I'm on tomorow over at http://www.radiooutofthepast.org playing classic old time radio. So please go over there check it out and if it strikes your fancy drop in between five and six. That's pm and that's Pacific or eiht or nine eastern. Program starts at nine or six sharp with a bit of chitchat beforehand. The company'd be real glad to welcome you in the words of Barliman Butterburr we don't get many outsiders very offten. MC |

There comes a time when people make mistakes. Even the Great Big Bird of Sesame Street fame or didn't you have Big Bird Sings when you were a child. Such was the case with Matt Cox last week when he unwittingly sent Fred Brideshead 3 for the final editing. Because of this and to keep the story current you're getting two episodes this week plus a Graham Green thriller from Fred. More about these in a moment but first a poll question. We open by asking you how you feel about different lengths of the show each week or two? Reason is BBC has so many 90 minute productions out we're holding back when we're not sharing. So would you mind some 90 minute plays? If so would you still mind if the other host plays an hour or would you rather see us keep to our two hour format? The neat thing about podcasts you can pause us if you need to. Please please please email us at brunch@london.com and let us know what you think. We'll keep discussing this as the answers come in and we thank you in advance for participating. When you email let us know who you are and where you're listening. I'm loving the hits and we'd love to know more a bit more about you and your favorite BBC programs. Even if you know nothing about the BBC and are learning from us let us know. Meanwhile this week. sSorry about the latenes. And the mistake. Perhaps it was the chocolate or the champagne or the strawberries as Heather and I relaxed in the desert. But if you want to know where we were vissit http://www.marriott.com/ctdca and take a look. Anyway you'll get Brideshead 2 and 3 this week from March 16 and 23 2003 followed by Graham Green's Ministry of Fear. This was originally broadcast on July 7 1973 but Radio 4 made it in to a two part two hour drama. Don't forget to email us your thoughts on 90 minute plays and we look forward to it. Matt and Fred |

We then spin out of this world with Fred to finish Hitchhikers and return to the little world of Don Camillo. Enjoy. Btw gang I leave for the desert on Thursday so I won't get the show until I get home. These aniversaries. Only come once a year and Mrs. Cox and I need a vacation. I mean gang Dan and Digby are chattin about biscuits and tea while exploring Venus. bBut it's fun and I hope for the next four installments you let Dan in to your hearts. They've done no more Dan Dare since. After Dan Dare we'll listen to episode 2 of As Time Goes By. Jean and Lionel go on a "date," of sorts. Then Fred Bertelsen plays the first episode of "In The Valley of Fear." This is an Arthur Conan Doyle novel and I warn you. Saturday Night Theater was a Radio 4 classic. And tonight's Brunch was no acception as we presented a whol hour and a half play. Remember the shot that killed Harry Lime? If you liked old time radio you do. This week we present "The Third Man," starring Ian Henri as Harry Lime and Rollo Martins being played by Philip Marlowe himself Ed Bishop or back then Edward Bishop. For those of you who don't know it's okay as "The Third Man," is what started it all. It spawned a ten episode BBC series back in the fifties after its release as a movie. It starred Joseph Cotton and Orson Wells. If you were a fan of the film you won't be disapointed with the play. Script is literally from screenplay. Enjoy. After the curtain comes down fred steps in to take us on the fourth installment of "The Bing Crosby Trail." |
